DH got a hold of some cornstalks from the Amish a week or so ago. They came and dumped them over our back line fence, while we were gone one day, then left a note on our front door. The cows have been enjoying having a extra treat in the middle of winter.
I was out with DH when he fed them the other day, when it was so warm...and he put some out for the boys, and the girls stood watching, saying "Hey...where is OURS!" It's always so funny to see how impatient they can get.
The girls were sure happy to see DH walking toward them with some in his hands. I know they are just dried up old stalks of corn...but in the middle of winter, when all they get is hay, they sure do enjoy having something a little different.
They won't last a real long time...but every little bit helps, when you have animals to feed.
Thankfully DH seems to think we have plenty of hay for the rest of the winter. He's heard from some of the Amish, that some people are having to sell their cows, cause they don't have enough hay. It was a dry summer last year, so I'm sure it was hard to find...thankfully we managed to get ours before to late. We will probably have to buy more this next year, as I'm not sure how much we will get off our little hay field...and I want to make SURE we have enough! I'd hate to have to sell any of our cows...just cause we didn't get enough hay to get them through the winter!
So much to do this year...and so LITTLE time (and money LOL)!! Course it doesn't help that we seem to be moving slower and slower these days...or that DH, while doing better after his back surgery, still has to be careful so he doesn't have another setback! Oh well...things will get done that really NEED done...and the rest will just have to wait I guess. Praise God for the work...that means we are living our dream life, on the farm! ;-))
