An idiot and his dog

I Love dogs, (usually) I do have to admit I prefer my own, but I love meeting other ones, and hearing stories about them. BUT I have met a few dogs I can't stand, mostly because their owners refuse to train them!! Pete, my DH's friend (from highschool) owns one of them. Pete has actually trained him to jump a fence, probably because he is to lazy to go open the gate, so he encouraged him to jump over it, which makes it so he can get out and go all over, if he is ever in a fence. That was the first thing that ticked me off about Buster (the dog).

Now that we live here on our farm, and have animals, he shows up from time to time with his dog, and even before a couple of incidents, I wanted him to WATCH his dog really close but knew he wouldn't. Shortly after we got our first chickens, Pete came over (with buster of course) and buster killed a chicken. It was a momma chicken who was raising a bunch of chicks. So naturally I was REALLY mad and when I was outside when he showed up I would make him keep buster in his car, which would make him mad and he would leave. I found that a great way to get rid of him!! Now I have really tried to be nice to this guy because he is my husbands friend, and I don't want to be the reason he looses a friend. Even though the last several times he has come here, he has done somthing to really tick me off (the last time he drove over my baby lilac bushes because he wanted to get closer to us, so he didn't have to walk a few extra feet by staying on the drive way) I haven't told him he wasn't welcome here, or anything because he was DH's friend. I have tried my best to be nice. While I am sure I haven't managed to be totally welcoming like I should be, I have done my best, and not told him off, or ran him off forever.....yet!

Well last night he came by to give DH something. I guess he didn't even get out of the car, I didn't even look outside, I avoided him becasue I didn't really want to get mad at anything. Don't know why I bothered, DH came in when he left and said that buster jumped out of the open window just as Pete was starting the car to leave and caught one of our cats and started shaking it hard to kill it. DH, being disabled and unable to move fast got to the dog as quickly as he could and took the metal pole he had in his hand he has been using as a walking stick when he is out around the farm, and beaned buster over the head with it to try to get him to let go of the cat and stop shaking it. Buster droped the cat and ran and jumped back in the car. Pete had the audacity to say "Buster knows how to take care of a cat" before he became a total coward and jumped back into his car and high tailed it down the driveway.

We found the cat on top of the moter under the hood of the car. She had managed to crawl up there to get as far away as she could from the dog. She died last night several hours later. A long, slow, lingering death. We brought her inside and put her in a pet taxi with some towels and food and water, but she hardly moved from where we put her. We didn't think she would make it, with the sound of her breathing but we didn't want to leave her outside where something else could get her, just in case. As upsetting as it is, that she died, and that it was a slow death, I am the most upset at Petes parting words. Just because he doesn't like cats, (or chickens) doesn't give him the right to allow his dog to kill our animals!!! While I am sure he didn't sic his dog onto our animals, he refuses to accept responsiblity of his dogs actions. Its the chickens fault, or the cats fault, not Busters. And he gloats about the fact that buster killed the cat.....well at the time he didn't know it was dead, but still......to say "Buster knows how to take care of cats" isn't the smartest thing to say. To my way of thinking we don't need friends like that, but thats a decision DH has to make. DH did send him an e-mail last night after we found the cat had died. Its in red below. I was really proud (and kinda surprised) of him for sending it, because I didn't figure he would actually ban Buster, just figured he would say he can't get out of the car if he comes over. We will see if Pete ever shows up out here again. I am sure he will be really mad, and prob spread something around town, but I don't care. If I don't have to see him again, I will be happy!!

Just to let you know –

The cat died about 10 minutes ago. It took her 4+ hours, but she finally went. Kind of a slow, lingering death. DO NOT bring Buster out here any more, even if he stays in the car. This is the second animal he has killed here. Do not try to justify this by blaming the cat. Buster was the one who jumped out of the car and chased her. Just because you (or him) do not like the animals we have, does not matter. They are OUR animals – respect them.

Gee we got a reply from the idiot!! Didn't expect that, wonder if this will actually be the last we hear from him!!!!!!!!!!!! ***jumping for joy just at the thought!!*** The reply is below. And just to clarify something DH says he only killed one cat when he was in highschool and it was because it kept getting into his garage and tearing things up. The main point is he was in highschool.....many years ago, when most people ARE young and stupid.....you would think that Pete would have had plenty of time to grow up and get smart by now!! After all they are over 40 now!! I guess Pete forgot about his dog killing our chicken too. Oh and Cats jump on cars, thats what they do. That doesn't mean its alright for the dog to kill them! There is no way to make cats NOT jump on cars, as far as I know!!

Message from Pete below.

"Don’t worry!!! This will be our last communication with the both of you. You were asked 3 times to not let them jump on the car and the fact it died is probably all the damn cats you ran over in high school!!! Besides that it is the only animal he killed where do you get off blaming him for more kills then he is accredited with he has killed one animal on your farm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

  1. COMMENTS FROM OLD BLOG!!

dapperdoxie: Thanks Fran! While I don't like this dog, I know its not because of the dog. Its because the owner didn't train him right so I don't blame the dog as much as I blame the owner! Thankfully it looks like we won't be seeing the dog again, so maybe he won't have the chance to kill more of our animals!

Galen (DH) (unverified): Odd thing about it - the cats NEVER DID get on his van and he only said to "keep them off of the vehicle" ONCE. Funny how some people believe thier kids (or dogs) can do no wrong. His attitude, even before the cat, was "stupid chickens" and "stupid cats", and he obviously had no respect for our animals. Well - they are not his animals to decide about! He needs to grow up and accept some responsibility.
