Hillbilly Lawnmower
It's about that time of year here finally, time to start cutting the grass, something that we tend to put off, but no one really cares cause after all we live in the country. Instead of getting the mower out today, we decided to let the cows out in the yard, as it would kill two birds with one stone so to speak. It would let the cows out with more grass, and maybe, make it so we didn't have to mow. *giggle* Ok, we didn't actually figure they would make it so we didn't have to mow...but it is a nice thought.
We just felt sorry for them still stuck over in the winter pasture, and since it will still be a few days before DH is ready to move them to their new summer home, we thought we would close off the drive (so they couldn't go up it and out onto the road) and let them enjoy the lush green grass around our house. That's not something I'd ever think of doing with the goats, however the cows don't eat the trees and bushes like the goats do, so I was more comfortable with letting them roam...although we DID keep an eye on them.
At first, they both roamed far and wide, through the hayfield, all the way to the line fence and up to the top of the hill. After they discovered all there was to see, they stayed down by the fence that keeps the goats in, south more while DH was out working this morning on their new summer home, and then closer to the house this afternoon, once DH was back here.
I think they like the company of the goats and Belle and Chuck, which is probably what kept them down that way, instead of roaming out into the hayfield more...or maybe they just like that grass better, it seems to be taller than in the hayfield for the most part so far. LOL I don't think they stopped eating, from the moment they were let out, till we had to herd them back in. Usually they eat for a while, and then lay down and chew their cud, then eat again, but every time I looked out to see where they were, they were up walking around, grabbing mouthfuls of grass as fast as they could. You would think they were starving or something. LOL
They did give me a laugh though, there was a bucket sitting out that had water in it, and I saw both of them fighting over it, instead of going back in and getting water out of their water tank. It's like they didn't want to go back into the pasture, for fear we wouldn't let them back out. Silly cows. LOL
They weren't real happy when we did put them back in, but it was the middle of the afternoon, they had been out for a while, and we figured they had probably had more than enough to eat, so we decided to put them back. Daisy saw me walking towards her, and figured out what was going on, so dashed off, but we got her in without to much trouble after that.
It's more interesting learning about a new kind of animal than I thought it would be. They are different than goats in a lot of ways, but they can be playful like the goats are too. I really love seeing their reddish brown against the green grass...it's so pretty. Course I LOVE the pink of the redbud tree in the first photo with Mabel too. :)
After we put the cows back, I had to stop off at the apple tree and try for more photos. It's an obsession I'm telling you...maybe even a disease, I just can't stop myself from trying to get that "perfect" photo of a insect on a flower, and if it happens to be a butterfly or moth....I'm even worse. I really need help, most especially because then I feel I have to scrap some of the better ones, and put them in my yearly book...and I'm behind enough as it is! *sigh* NOT that it would be easy for anyone to actually make me STOP taking photos...so don't even try! *giggle*
Ok, just wanted to blab about our day with the cows....or hillbilly lawnmowers. LOL More photos on flicker, if ya want to see them. I'll shut up...for now. *evil laugh*

LOL I love it! True Yard Varmints as grass sitters! As for the illness with photography and scrapping - which we share - and with many - LOL - the world can just deal with it! My answer to any complaints - "It could be worse! At least it's nothing that has my daddy out there trying to do damage control!"
ReplyDeleteThe cows look so happy! I think letting them mow the grass is wonderful!
