A Good Day
Today has been a good day...for the most part anyway. This morning we had to go to Lincoln because when I bought my camera last November I got a free class, that I could take what ever month we wanted to and we finally got around to doing that this month. I learned a few things and even hubby, who isn't into cameras all that much, said he had fun so that always makes me have more fun too, knowing it wasn't so bad for him. We did a little shopping, before we came home so it was the middle of the afternoon before we got back.
Since I had learned a few things about my camera, I wanted to go test it out so we headed out to the goats, once we got things in from the car and the cold stuff put away. I got out there first and gave Rosy a ear of corn, because she is locked in a stall for now, since she is really slowing down and acting like she will have her babies anytime. She wanted me to hold it for her, while she chewed on the other end, so I did till Galen got out there. *giggle*
Once Galen got out there we went on back to the back of the barn to go outside. I noticed Yani laying in the doorway in the old part of the barn, but didn't really think much about it, except for a passing thought that it was a little odd that she didn't get up to come see me (ok so I should pay more attention to her signals)...and I started to go outside when Galen who had walked over toward Yani called me back. It seems that Whinny who wasn't locked in a stall, cause she hadn't been acting like she was going to kid, had decided it was time to. So Yani was being a good girl and standing guard, keeping the other goats away from her so she wouldn't be disturbed.
Whinny had three tiny babies...one was still born though, it didn't look like it was "fully cooked" yet, like it needed more time to develop out right, not sure why. There was a red one standing up walking around, and a little black one laying down still wet. We aren't sure if the black one will make it or not, because he isn't getting up and around like the red one is, but the red one has been walking around and eating so hopefully at least that one will live...she had all males though, we were really hoping for a female or two out of her and/or Rosy...so hopefully Rosy comes through for us! LOL Triplets is a little less common than twins, and they don't do as well usually, when there are three, so her loosing the one isn't surprising.
Here is a photo of the red one who was walking around when we first saw it. He is so tiny, I know I say that every time we have a new baby born, but he just seems so small, I don't know if he was smaller, because of there being two others, or if he just seems so small cause the other three youngsters have gotten so big in the last two months, but whichever it is he seems so tiny and adorable. Course being used to having Boer goats and this one being Nubian makes me see differences too. His legs are longer and thinner, than our Boer babies. It will be interesting to see how he is when he gets a little older. But just look at those long floppy ears...gotta love them, I must have a thing with long floppy ears, cause the Boer goats have them, and the Nubian's do...and of course our Doxie's do! *giggle*
That first photo up at the top shows DH giving Yani a little extra attention since she was such a good girl doing her job this afternoon. She even got an extra bone today because of it. We have been going to the locker plant in town and buying a bag of bones from them (they aren't very expensive for a big bag) and DH gives her one almost every morning, because it's good for her to have real meat, so today she ended up getting two. Yes we spoil ALL our animals, we can't help it. LOL
It appears we will be having kittens soon around here too, because two of our cats are starting to look like footballs. Hopefully they take care of them this time and keep them alive, last time things didn't go so well and they didn't survive. Course when we do get kittens up older so they don't have to depend on mom feeding them, they either wander and get caught by something larger and meaner than they are, or they go out with the goats and get stepped on. Lately we haven't had good luck keeping kittens...so we will see how it goes this time around.
So anyway, we had a good day, between learning a few new things about my camera, having a good day together in Lincoln, and then coming home to new babies...even though it is sad that at least one didn't make it. I hope all of you are having a good weekend too! I better get off here and do a little homework, I just had to share a photo of our newest addition...and of course a long ramble to go with it. *giggle* Oh and there are some more photos from today on flicker if you are interested. Thanks for your comments both here on my blog and through e-mail! :)
