Unhappy calf & other ramblings
I didn't go out and get a close up so it's hard to see, but DH put the halter on the calf this morning. Needless to say, he wasn't a happy camper. *giggle* I love to watch him in the morning when DH gets done milking and lets them out into the yard, cause he usually has his morning romp, running around the front yard, while Mom & Auntie Mabel enjoy the fresh grass. This morning however I was busy and missed seeing him, till DH came in and said he wasn't real happy. He wasn't romping around as much, and would shake his head trying to get that nasty halter off, but found he couldn't budge it.
He did stop and stare at the dogs, when they went out barking at them, but that was just a temporary diversion. We haven't seen the cows this afternoon, as they are out in their favorite spot, at the south end of our property, but I'm sure he still isn't real happy with it, although hopefully he has gotten a little more used to it. Little does he know that's going to be the least of his worries when he gets old enough to be banded...then he will wish that was his only problem. *snicker*
I thought I was going to have to cry this afternoon...I made mozzarella cheese, but it wasn't setting up after I put the rennet in. I finally put some more in, and it still didn't seem to be doing anything...but after moaning about it to DH I came back in and found the curds had separated. I have no idea why it was so different from the last time, but hopefully adding the extra rennet didn't change it so it won't be any good. It's chilling in the cold water bath right now, then I'll put it in the fridge...and tomorrow we should be able to tell if it worked ok or not. It's editable now, but the springy texture of mozzarella doesn't usually show up till the next day.
It wouldn't have been such a big deal, but I've not been able to make cheese for over a week (actually probably about 2 weeks), and who knows when the next time will be, because the triplets are taking more milk now...so we are back to not getting a bunch, least the last 2 or 3 milkings DH hasn't brought as much inside. Thankfully we are getting some from Daisy now, or we wouldn't be able to feed the triplets real milk. They are worth not getting much...just really wish Daisy would pick up on what she is giving so we got a nice amount over what the triplets took! *giggle* I know....I'm just never satisfied. I really am thankful for what we are getting.
My goal however, is to be able to make cottage cheese, Mozzarella, and a hard cheese once a week...if I want to, but that's going to take way more milk than we are getting now. Being able to slip in another one or two kinds would be nice too...but I doubt I'll make them real often. I haven't made yogurt for a while now, and need to get back to doing that too. *sigh* So much to do and so little time...(and milk) to do it in! LOL
Speaking of the little monsters...AKA the Triplets...they seem to be doing good and growing. DH thinks that Jane has adopted them, (when he isn't looking) cause he has seen her letting them eat several times during the day...till she sees him watching, then she walks off. LOL It's funny how she doesn't want to let on that she is a good goat. *giggle* And to think we thought she would be the most trouble, in this fostering program we have, but it turned out to be Carmel instead. Go figure.
I missed a good photo op yesterday morning. DH let the little monsters (called that cause they are monsters when they are hungry ROFL) follow him out to feed some of the other animals in the morning, before he milked the cows and then fed them. It was so cute seeing him walking with the three babies following him, but I didn't have time to get my camera and get a photo.
I've been working on getting my DH's blog revamped...actually you can't see it yet, cause I use one of my old blogs, till I have it like I want it, then I'll move it over. I about have my part done, but have to get him busy on revamping a few "pages" cause I don't want to redo his blog, till they are finished. I did what I could do there to, but some of the info is stuff that only he can change...as I don't know how he wants things worded. It will be nice to get it finished up, so I'm done with that kinda thing for now. Then if we want to change the background or something it will be fairly easy to do...not that I'm to good at doing that really...as you can see from my blog, since it's still pretty much the same "look" as it was before. Guess I've never been one who liked change all that much...well for some things. LOL
Anyway, I better get off here and get supper in the oven! Hope everyone has a great weekend, I can't believe it's here already, where did this week go?
Take Care!
Even if he is unhappy, he is a cutie.
