Another Hot Week

Auntie Mabel & Stew

It's still been really hot this week, several days over 100 with high humidity which makes it seem even hotter. The cows stay in the shade of the trees dotted around our yard and pasture for the most part. A lot of times we can look out and see Stew laying under a tree close to Auntie Mabel...he seems to hang out with her More than his mother. LOL Makes me wonder if her milk tastes better!

DH thinks he is nipping from her too, not just his Mom, cause when she comes to be milked, her teat is sometimes slick and shinny like she has been nursed on. I don't know if Mabel was ever used for a nurse cow, but it kinda looks like maybe she was since she is allowing him to nurse. Funny how he has two "Mom's".

I've gotten some apples worked up, some for the freezer for pie and some into Apple Sauce. I didn't get as much done as I would have liked, but it's been kinda slow going with other things to do, and yesterday we had an appointment in the city, so couldn't do any. Next week, hopefully I'll get several more jars of Apple Sauce made. :)

Rascal...well he is still sick, no good news there although he did appear to be a little better yesterday but I'm not holding my breath, cause last week on Friday he looked like he was too. He is still throwing up, although has kept a little food down both yesterday and today...so that's a plus. Poor baby is so hungry, but when nothing stays down he can't eat much. He has been getting some hamburger, some frozen broccoli (as that was the first thing we noticed stayed down longer) and this morning he had some oatmeal with some b-vitamins mixed in. Not all of it stayed down, but hopefully some did. We will see what next week brings. It's been good the last couple of days, to have a tiny bit of relief from the worry of watching him go downhill, cause that just gets a little much for me to take.

It's suppose to be cooler this next week, and hopefully it is, as the 100+ temps are really hard on our animals and slows down what can be done around here as we try to stay cool too. I hope everyone has a great weekend!

  1. Deb,

Had to do this with Zucker. If he's keeping some down - sounds like there's an imbalance with bacteria in his digestive system. Try adding some extra Acidophilus in some plain yogurt and see if he'll hold it down. Give it about two weeks and see if you don't have some good changes coming around.

  2. Forgot to tell you... I gave Zucker about 1 tablespoon of the yogurt with a pinch of the Acidophilus added.
