Slow News Week

Berry Smoothie

It's been one of those slow weeks we didn't really have a lot going on, least not a lot that makes for interesting reading. If I had tried harder, I'm sure I could have come up with more...but my mind has been elsewhere, trying to get a few things done so I didn't try to hard to think of blog posts...therefore, two days this week were post less. LOL

However today I just had to post.

Earlier this week I was looking around on a recipe site I visit, and found a post about kefir smoothies. I thought it looked really good, and since I make my own yogurt from our fresh raw cow's milk, I figured I could use it since I don't make kefir yet (hopefully someday I can get some kefir grains and try some).

Then this morning, before breakfast, I was sitting at my computer and found Pioneer Woman's new post about Smoothies for breakfast. She was using yogurt, and I just HAD to go try some for myself, since this was the 2nd time in the same week I'd been reading about them...and I had just made a fresh batch of yogurt yesterday. :)

Course, I didn't have any fresh berries...it's not something we can afford to often, especially in the middle of winter. However I did have some frozen ones, since I try to keep them on hand for yogurt...and they are (so far, for us) affordable from Sams club. I had strawberries, and a bag of mixed berries that had blueberries, raspberries and blackberries in it. I grabbed all of them and dug my poor old (cheap) blender out of the pantry and set to work. (OK, DH dug the blender out, cause he wanted a berry smoothie. *giggle*)

Since my blender is a cheap one it doesn't get used to often (which is why it was back in the corner of the bottom shelf in my pantry), cause it really doesn't work real great...one of these days I'll invest in a better one I hope. However, it may find itself working a LOT more often, now that we have made these yummy smoothie's. :)

I just used the berries, yogurt and some Xylitol (instead of sugar, since DH is diabetic...and I thought the Xylitol would taste better than stevia in the smoothie). I didn't add ice like Pioneer Woman suggested, cause my poor blender doesn't do well with ice...but I think it would be even better with it!

I didn't have any whey from my cheese making, but next time I make some, I think I'll keep a little and try adding some of it for the extra vitamin's and goodness whey can add to food. Course my homemade yogurt is not as thick as store bought usually, so I may not need that extra liquid...we will see how it goes.

Anyway, we LOVED the berry smoothies, and will for sure be making them again! It's a great way to eat a lot of yogurt, which is good for you...and while I like yogurt, it's not something I usually want every day...however if you blend it up with fruit and drink it, I think I could handle having more of it. I can't wait to get some banana's and try them in with the berries...I think that would be even tastier!

The poor dogs however....especially Autumn who LOVES fruit...aren't real fond of us making smoothie's instead of just having yogurt. Poor babies didn't get any of my fruit and yogurt this morning, cause I drank it all myself! *giggle* I usually save the last of my bowl of yogurt for them to finish...it gives them a treat and some good yogurt for their tummies.

Guess I'll have to start giving them their own now, if I'm going to make smoothies...cause yogurt is good for animals, not just people (as long as it doesn't have to much sugar it is anyway).

Have a wonderful weekend! :-))
